The delicate lime blossoms not only exude an intoxicating, honey-sweet scent – they are also a true treasure for my natural cosmetics. Already in antiquity, people knew about the beneficial effects of lime blossoms, and Hildegard von Bingen recommended over 800 years ago to place lime leaves on one's face to sleep better. Today, their healing power is being rediscovered.
A plant with history and healing power
At the time of lime blossom, usually from early June, the majestic trees fill entire streets with their scent – accompanied by the buzzing concert of bees feasting on the abundant blossoms. The lime tree is one of the most important bee pastures and also one of Europe's oldest medicinal plants. Its blossoms are traditionally used for colds, fever, coughs, and stress. Lime blossom tea is known for its mild but effective action – especially for sleep disorders and inner restlessness.
The Kaiserlinden tree at Nikolaihof – the root of my organic grape cosmetics
In my organic grape cosmetics, the lime tree plays a very special role. This is because we process the blossoms of our over 100-year-old Kaiserlinden tree, which stands in the courtyard of Nikolaihof Wachau. Planted in 1908 for Emperor Franz Joseph's 60th anniversary of accession, it not only provides shade and fragrance today but also the basis for a unique active ingredient extract.
The harvest is a ritual: For only a few days a year, the blossoms are at their optimal ripeness. During this short time, they are carefully hand-harvested. We then gently dry them in the old wooden attics of the granary before they are processed into a valuable extract that is used in my skincare products.
