Nikolaihof Wachau
Demeter Pioneer & Austria's Oldest Winery
History
Nikolaihof Wachau is Austria's oldest winery, with a history of almost 2,000 years. Its current appearance stands on the foundations of the Roman fort, and the old Roman cellars are still used as wine cellars today. Over the centuries, Nikolaihof was a bishop's seat and a monastery, until it was acquired by the Saahs family in 1894.
Winery
For almost 50 years, Nikolaihof Wachau has been one of the first wineries in the world to be biodynamically farmed and today stands for internationally awarded, age-worthy white wines. In 2005, Nikolaus Saahs took over the family winery from his parents and, out of deep conviction, farms according to Demeter's strict organic criteria.
