My big goal is to gradually replace all products in my bathroom with sustainable, Demeter-certified cosmetics from my own vineyards. In addition to facial care, last year I also focused on a topic that affects all of us daily and reveals shocking details upon closer inspection: shower products.
A look at the endlessly long ingredient lists of conventional shower gels quickly reveals how many synthetic substances such as silicones, liquid microplastics, and environmentally harmful additives like palm oil-based surfactants are used in shower products. These substances can be produced cheaply, serve as preservatives, or make the products foam more. But beware – these substances are not only unnatural for our bodies and are often described as hormonally active or even carcinogenic, but they can also enter the environment through wastewater, damage it, and end up back on our plates indirectly.
Artificial fragrances are also often and readily used in shower gels to numb your senses. Scientific studies show that these fragrances from your morning shower gel can still be detected in the air you breathe, sometimes even in the evening. This is a frightening indication that highlights how important it is to rely on high-quality natural products without chemicals, even for products that don't remain on the skin.
Unfortunately, there are not many alternatives for packaging shower gels yet. The use of glass is not recommended due to the risk of injury if it breaks in the shower, which is why most manufacturers rely on plastic. I am very proud that I use recycled bottles for my shower products. These are made from 100% recycled PET caps and were also produced in an environmentally friendly way. This way, you can help process existing plastic waste without claiming new cultivation areas or crude oil for the production of new plastic packaging.
With all this knowledge in mind, I started developing my own shower gels a year ago and am incredibly happy to be able to take another step towards a sustainable bathroom. With the biodynamic raw materials from our vineyards, I have succeeded in developing what are probably the world's first Demeter shower gels. In three different varieties (Riesling, Kaiserlinde & Elderflower), I have processed selected organic raw materials to pamper your skin with the pure power of nature and transport your senses to Nikolaihof and my vineyards. I completely avoid palm oil, silicones, microplastics, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances, and the packaging is also sustainable! Good for body, hair, and the environment.
Riesling (green)
Inspired by the world's first wine to be awarded for its health benefits, I have developed a shower gel for all wine lovers. With biodynamic Riesling from Nikolaihof and grape skins as ingredients, it's an intoxicating shower experience!
Elderflower (blue)
Elderflower is a true superfood of our region and extremely healthy from its blossoms to its berries. For my Elderflower shower gel, I use elderflower and elderberry syrup – for a berry shower experience.
Kaiserlinde (pink)
Enchanted by the 110-year-old linden tree in our inner courtyard, I have developed a rich shower milk. It nourishes dry skin, making it smooth with grapeseed oil and sunflower oil.
